Cute Bag or Just Baggage?
More than worries are weighing us down. See how to lighten your load and give your shoulder a break

While the Internet may bring the world to your fingertips, your purse probably brings your life to your hands – literally. But more than just convenience rests on your shoulder: You’re also putting a strain on your body that can have serious repercussions.
“You create stresses in areas that weren’t intended to carry heavy loads,” says Dr. Jane Sadler, family practice physician at the Baylor Medical Center, Garland, Texas.
By putting that bag or purse on your right shoulder, your left shoulder feels the pressure as your body struggles to balance. The effects can linger even when you unburden yourself, says Bill Case, a physical therapist and spokesperson for the American Physical Therapy Association.
Although you may find it impossible to wean yourself from excess baggage, you can at least manage some of the weight. Prevent pain by choosing lighter pieces and improving fitness. “It makes a huge difference. The stronger the muscle, the more tolerant your body will be,” Case says.
